All UK employment law solicitors are reporting massive increases in the numbers of people that are coming to them to make employment tribunal claims. In fact, one firm of solicitors has reported a huge 56% increase in the number of tribunals handled, compared with last year. This worrying statistic must in no small part be attributed to the current economic crisis that the country is facing.
Employers are failing to follow official legal guidelines that are clearly set out on how to deal with their staff. This is especially a problem when it comes to making staff redundant.
When a member of staff has worked for an employer for more than a year, they are entitled to bring a claim against them, in the event that they feel they have been treated unlawfully.
Another reason for this huge rise in claims has been put down to the fact that employers are refraining from approaching solicitors in order to have the law set out to them before going ahead. This is all in an effort to save the company a few pounds and if this rise in tribunals is anything to go by, this is proving to be something of a false economy.
In such a terribly harsh economy, it is unfortunate that some businesses are going to be forced to let staff go - that is the nature of the beast. However, it is equally important for said employer to approach an employment law specialist to ensure they are following the official procedures that have been laid out for them.
